The UHD release of Se7en introduces certain limitations compared to the previous DVD and Blu-ray editions. These differences reflect the technical constraints and priorities of the Ultra HD Blu-ray (UHD-BD) format, as well as the decision to consolidate all content onto a single UHD disc.
Multi-Angle Features
- The UHD-BD specification does not support multi-angle functionality, which was utilized in special features on the DVD and Blu-ray editions of Se7en.
- As a result, features such as the Exploration of the Opening Title Sequence and the Telecine Gallery are re-presented in this release in a fashion that does not utilize the angle feature.
High-Resolution Audio
- Despite UHD's capability to support high-resolution audio, the LPCM 24-bit/96 kHz stereo mix included in earlier editions for the Exploration of the Opening Title Sequence feature is not present on the UHD disc.
One-Disc Approach
- The UHD release consolidates all content onto a single disc, if a second Blu-ray disc was used for the special features, then legacy features like multi-angle could have been ported over.
Conclusion
While the UHD release of Se7en offers superior 4K HDR video, it sacrifices features that were available in the special features of previous editions:
- Multi-angle functionality for the title sequence exploration and Telecine Gallery has been replaced with a simplified presentation.
- The high-resolution LPCM 24-bit/96 kHz audio mix for the same feature is no longer included.
For enthusiasts of these features, the DVD or Blu-ray editions remain the most comprehensive versions for exploring the film's technical and creative achievements.
