Last Crusade
Appearance
INT. STUDY – EARLY EVENING The light is dimming. A copy of *Radio Times* sits on the armrest. Joanna is seated, reflective. JOANNA I saw the new Indiana Jones last night. GYLES Oh yes! The Last Crusade. JOANNA Mmm. That’s what they’re calling it. GYLES You didn’t like it? JOANNA I didn’t say that. I just don’t think Spielberg is really interested anymore. GYLES Oh, I thought it was marvellous. I thought Marcus Brody was fantastic. [Joanna turns toward him.] JOANNA You’re not serious. GYLES Yes! He’s wonderful. So funny. JOANNA He was a man of poise and competence. They turned him into a clown. GYLES It’s meant to be comic. JOANNA It wasn’t dignified. They debased the character. [A pause.] GYLES I thought the stamp joke was good. JOANNA The what? GYLES You know—the librarian in Venice, stamping books. And every time Indy slammed the floor with the pole, it echoed through the whole library— and the man just kept stamping, getting more and more puzzled by how loud it was. JOANNA (quietly) I see. GYLES It was delightful. JOANNA Was it? FADE OUT.
